“Chinese Mojo” is an autobiographical photo project. Although the project is distinctly Chinese in aesthetic and theme, the heart is similar to other immigrant people’s stories, no matter what their heritage. This project was created during Bibiana’s 40th anniversary in America. Like with all immigrants, there is the inherent struggle of being in between two worlds. As such, it is every immigrant’s tale and one that many people of diverse cultural experiences will be able to relate to. Mojo is a blues music term for a good luck charm. The concept of “mojo” is also found in Chinese mysticisms and ancient beliefs. This project is an expression of an immigrant– of heritage, of connecting with my ancestors, of cross-cultural integration and never being fully able to integrate. It explores the continuity of creativity that passed down through generations.
The medium is photography of collages, installation art and the creation of deeply personal visual vignettes– of symbolism and expressionism, a cross-cultural family album. Every object has a family story; every picture tells a story. Some are valuable objects while others were found on the street. It all becomes a visual tapestry, a visual treasure box. This exhibit includes 40 images, each with their own autobiographical story.
